European investigators surveyed 1,136 patients with PD (median age: 68 years). Among those who acknowledged using cannabis, 60 percent said that it improves their quality of life. Most respondents said that cannabis mitigates their pain and rigidity and improves their sleep. Approximately 40 percent of consumers said that cannabis use reduces their tremor frequency. Many patients similarly reported beneficial effects from the use of CBD products.

“Both cannabis and CBD users reported high effectiveness levels for sleep disorders, pain, and rigidity/cramps, as well as high overall levels of satisfaction with the substances,” the study’s authors concluded. “An enhanced communication with healthcare providers and facilitated access to safe products are needed so that people with PD can maximize the benefits of cannabinoids when clinically appropriate.”

Observational studies have found cannabis inhalation to be associated with PD symptom improvements, including improvements in pain, tremor, and bradykinesia (slowness of movement).

Marijuana consumers are more than three times more likely to regularly exercise than drink alcohol—and they’re nearly five times more likely to routinely work out than eat fast food—according to another stereotype-defying survey.

The poll from the cannabis telehealth platform NuggMD looked at the habits of cannabis users, who were asked about the frequency they engage in seven different activities—from alcohol consumption to movie theater attendance.

One of the takeaways was that marijuana consumers reported regularly engaging in exercise (27.4% daily and 34.9%multiple times per week) significantly more often than using alcohol (6.1% daily and 11.3% multiple times per week).

Another finding from the survey was that cannabis consumers are 4.8 times more likely to regularly exercise than to eat fast food (1.5% daily and 11.5% multiple times per week).

Notably, the new poll also found that relatively few marijuana consumers frequently use food delivery services, with just 3.3% reporting that they order delivery daily and 8.3% saying they use such services multiple times a week.

A majority of sports fans across multiple leagues—from NFL to pro tennis and NBA to NASCAR—say it’s acceptable for cannabis companies to sponsor teams, according to a new survey from Performance Research and Full Circle Research.

There was more support for allowing CBD-related sponsorships, as opposed to deals with “THC brands,” but in no case was there majority opposition to either kind of partnership among fans of nine different sports leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, UFC, NHL, Pro Tennis, Pro Golf and NASCAR.

Study: Rising Percentage of Seniors Acknowledge Regularly Consuming Cannabis

An estimated seven percent of US adults ages 65 and older acknowledge having consumed cannabis within the past month, according to data published yesterday in the journal

Investigators reported that those with higher incomes and those seniors suffering from chronic health conditions were most likely to report current cannabis use. The study’s findings are consistent with data provided by AARP and others finding that a growing percentage of older adults are turning to cannabis, often for therapeutic purposes.

Many older adults struggle with pain, anxiety, restless sleep, and other conditions for which cannabis products often mitigate. Many older adults are also well aware of the litany of serious adverse side-effects associated with available prescription drugs, like opioids or sleep aids, and they see medical cannabis as a practical and potentially safer alternative.

Separate survey data published in 2024 determined that most older adults possess positive perceptions about cannabis, and several recent studies show that marijuana use is typically associated with quality of life improvements in seniors.

Scientists identified 33 cannabis genome markers tied to cannabinoid production, paving the way for faster, targeted breeding and new strain innovation.

Scientists report that they’ve identified 33 “significant markers” in the cannabis genome that “significantly influence cannabinoid production”—a finding they say promises to drive the development of new plant varieties with specific cannabinoid profiles.

“This approach promises to speed up the breeding process, reduce costs significantly compared to traditional methods, and ensure that the resulting Cannabis varieties are optimized for specific medical and recreational needs,” authors wrote, calling the study “a significant stride toward fully integrating Cannabis into modern agricultural practices and genetic research, paving the way for future innovations.”

The analysis involved use of “a high-density genotyping approach” looking at thousands of molecular markers across the genome of 174 cannabis specimens in Canada, each with known levels of cannabinoids such as THCA, CBDA and CBN. “Using suitable statistical methods,” the team said, “we identified 33 molecular markers associated with 11 cannabinoid traits, most of them having a high impact on the phenotype.”

Among the findings were what the paper calls a “massive” set of genes on one plant chromosome that involved about 60 megabases (Mb) and was associated specifically with THC-dominant cannabis strains.

Authors from Université Laval in Québec, Canada said the research represents a shift away from years of cannabis prohibition that “have impeded the establishment of genetic resource collections and the development of advanced breeding practices, thus limiting both the genetic improvement and the understanding of

Patients with musculoskeletal pain experience symptomatic improvements and few side effects following the sustained use of medical cannabis, according to newly data published in the scientific journal

Investigators affiliated with the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia assessed the safety and efficacy of long-term cannabis use in a cohort of 129 patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. Study participants were registered in Pennsylvania’s medical cannabis access program and were assessed for at least one year. Over three-quarters of study subjects reported using at least one type of cannabis product daily, with most (64 percent) choosing to use topical formulations.

Consistent with prior studies, the majority (93 percent) of pain patients said that cannabis improved their primary symptoms. Cognitive and motor effects were minimal for most users, with 72 percent reporting “no impact” on their thinking, coordination, or motor functions.

Some 40 percent of study participants acknowledged reducing their use of traditional analgesics, including opioids, following medical cannabis initiation – a finding that is also consistent with other studies.

Investigators affiliated with Tulane University’s School of Medicine assessed the adjunctive use of Epidiolex in 208 patients with treatment-resistant childhood epilepsy.

Researchers reported a significant decrease in seizure frequency across all diagnostic categories, with an overall median reduction in monthly seizures from 30 to eight. Forty-nine percent of patients experienced a greater than 25 percent reduction in seizure frequency following CBD treatment. Twenty-one percent of participants experienced a 51 to 75 percent reduction in seizures.

“Our study demonstrates that cannabidiol offers significant benefits in reducing seizure frequency across a variety of epilepsy etiologies in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy,” the study’s authors concluded. “While CBD’s efficacy in conditions like Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome is well-documented our findings underscore CBD’s broader potential in managing other types of DEEs [developmental and epileptic encephalopathies], focal/multifocal epilepsy, and primary generalized epilepsy.”

Cannabinoids in medical marijuana can both increase the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs and also minimize the often uncomfortable side-effects of conventional cancer treatment, according to a new scientific review of available evidence.

The 23-page paper, published online this month in the journal Pharmacology & Therapeutics, assesses a range of clinical and preclinical findings that “mainly relate to combination treatments for glioblastoma, hematological malignancies and breast cancer, but also for other cancer types. To summarize, the data available to date raise the prospect that cannabinoids may increase the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents while reducing their side effects.”

Overall, while the interactions between cannabinoids and chemotherapeutics “constitute a complex subject with many yet unknown variables,” the study says, there are “two important therapy-relevant aspects of the interaction between cannabinoids and chemotherapeutic agents that could potentially benefit cancer patients: firstly, the systemic potentiation of chemotherapeutics by cannabinoids, primarily leading to an extension of life by overcoming therapy resistance and secondly, the reduction of chemotherapy-induced side effects.”

“In addition to this well-known antiemetic effect of cannabinoids,” the report adds, “an increasing number of preclinical studies discussed in this review have shown in recent years that cannabinoids can also have a positive effect on other side effects of chemotherapy, such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), nephrotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, cystitis and mucositis.”

While the report deals in less depth with other cancer-related symptoms, it notes that cannabinoids are also administered to relieve cancer-related chronic pain.

A new survey of veterans and their families finds that a majority—57 percent—feels the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) should provide medical marijuana to eligible patients.

The poll was conducted by Mission Roll Call, a nonprofit that represents veterans. Results come from “nearly 2,000 responses from all 50 states, and 95% of respondents are either a veteran or a family member of a veteran,” the group said.

Belgian researchers examined the relationship between past-month cannabis use and physical activity in a cohort of adults between the ages of 15 and 64. After controlling for potential confounders, investigators reported that past-month cannabis consumption had “no effect” on participants’ levels of physical activity. “The stereotypical image of cannabis users having more sedentary lifestyles should be critically reevaluated in light of our and other research,” the study’s authors concluded.

Harvard Analysis: Cannabis Smoking Not Linked To Increased Risk of Emphysema, Other Tobacco-Related Harms

Cannabis smoking poses fewer pulmonary risks than tobacco smoking and it is not positively associated with the development of emphysema, according to Harvard Medical School researchers.

Participants who smoked tobacco exhibited greater damage to their hearts and lungs than did those who exclusively smoked marijuana. Specifically, tobacco smokers were far more likely to demonstrate moderate to severe coronary artery calcifications and suffer from emphysema. “The findings of our study collectively highlight the distinct patterns of pulmonary and cardiovascular manifestations associated with smoking and marijuana use,” the study’s authors concluded. “It appears that, in general, marijuana users do not appear to develop emphysema or pulmonary hyperinflation.”

Their conclusion is consistent with several other studies finding that cannabis smoke and tobacco smoke are not equally carcinogenic and that marijuana smoke exposure is not linked to higher risks of either COPD, emphysema, lung cancer, or other tobacco-related harms. Moreover, the use of vaporization technology, which heats herbal cannabis to a set temperature below the point of combustion, is associated with reduced exposure to toxic gasses and has been identified as a “safe and effective” cannabis delivery device in clinical trial settings.

Using Marijuana Reduces Alcohol Cravings In People Who Drink A Lot, Federally Funded Study Shows

New federally funded research into the effects of cannabis on alcohol use finds that people who used marijuana immediately before drinking subsequently consumed fewer alcoholic beverages and reported lower cravings for alcohol.

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, provides further evidence of a substitution effect, in which users report replacing some or all of their alcohol use with cannabis. An eight-person research team from Colorado State University and the University of Colorado looked at the behavior of 62 adults who used both marijuana and alcohol and who engaged in heavy drinking for at least three months.

When subjects used alcohol alone, they drank on average two self-administered beverages. With cannabis added to the mix, the average number of self-administered drinks was 1.5—roughly 25 percent lower. And while not every participant drank less after using marijuana, those who did “reported reductions in alcohol craving at several timepoints after consuming cannabis and alcohol compared to alcohol alone,” the report says. Respondents also reported feeling healthier and more productive in their day to day lives when using cannabis more frequently.

The study concludes that “for some individuals who drink heavily, cannabis may serve as a substitute for alcohol, and craving reduction may be the mechanism through which this occurs.”

Investigators assessed the use of cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) in a cohort of 134 patients with treatment-resistant epilepsy. (British health care providers may prescribe cannabis-based medicinal products to patients unresponsive to conventional medications.) Patients’ outcomes were assessed at one, three, and six months.
